Extreme heat in Greece/ Government orders mandatory 4-hour work suspension in

Greece has taken several emergency measures to protect workers from the heat, due to the high temperatures that have engulfed the entire continent for several days.

The measures will come into effect from tomorrow, and according to Greek media, a mandatory ban on outdoor manual work will be imposed from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in eastern Central Greece, Thessaly, eastern Peloponnese and all of Attica.

The measures also apply to work in technical and construction projects, construction sites and shipbuilding and repair areas, as well as the distribution and transport of products by two-wheeled vehicles. The mandatory shutdown includes all employees, regardless of their form of employment, including those working through digital platforms.

For delivery businesses, the suspension applies to both physical stores and digital platforms. However, in-store pickup and delivery by private or public air-conditioned vehicles, excluding motorcycles, may remain available.

Activities related to critical social infrastructure in the health, transport and public services sectors are exempted from the mandatory ban. Exceptions include, among others, health units, water supply, electricity supply, air transport, goods processing, as well as maritime, land and rail transport.

A prerequisite for their continued operation is the implementation of the required technical and organizational protection measures, including the proper organization of working time.

As stated in the order of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, in case of violation of mandatory leave, the Labor Inspectorate may impose a fine of 2,000 euros for each employee of the company. /CNA
