Tragedy in the Mediterranean / Migrant boat sinks, more than 100 victims

Another tragedy has occurred in the Mediterranean, this time off the coast of Libya. At least 116 migrants have died after the boat carrying them capsized. Only 1 person is reported to have survived.

Alarm Phone, an international network of activists and volunteers that runs an emergency hotline for migrants in difficulty while crossing the Mediterranean, reported the incident, saying they suspected another boat had sunk.

The incident is suspected to have occurred on the night of December 19, when the "Alarm Phone" organization was informed of a ship that had departed from Zuwara, with 117 people on board.

The organization stated that it had repeatedly tried to contact the ship via satellite phone, but without success. According to “Alarm Phone”, the Libyan and Italian Coast Guards had stated that they had neither rescued nor stopped any migrant boats.

Meanwhile, the sole survivor was reportedly rescued by Tunisian fishermen on the evening of December 21. The rescued individual said the boat sank a few hours after leaving Zuwara, due to worsening weather. /CNA
