Ukraine, wave of attacks before Christmas

As Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine, Pope Leo XIV asked Russia for a 24-hour ceasefire for the Christmas holiday.

At least three people have been killed in repeated Russian air strikes in Ukraine. A four-year-old child was killed in the Zhytomyr region west of the capital, Kiev, when a drone hit a residential building, President Zelensky said on social media. According to regional authorities, six other people were injured, including two children. Zelensky also said a woman was killed in a Russian drone strike in the Kiev region. There was also one casualty in the Khmelnytsky region. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to stay in air-raid shelters.

At a time when temperatures in Ukraine are very low, Moscow has increasingly targeted and is hitting energy infrastructure.

Zelensky: Putin will not give up murders

The Ukrainian president said Russia had used 650 drones and dozens of guided missiles in its latest attacks. Air defense units shot down many of the drones and missiles, but there was also damage. "These attacks are happening before Christmas, when people want to be safe at home with their families," Zelensky said. He added that Russian President Vladimir Putin is showing that he will not stop the killings. The world must put more pressure on Russia to end the war, said Zelensky, who posted numerous photos on social media of the destruction from the latest Russian attacks.

Pope Leo XIV: Call for a 24-hour ceasefire

Pope Leo XIV asked Russia for a 24-hour ceasefire for the Christmas holiday in Ukraine. According to Vatican News, the Pope said: "I am truly saddened by the fact that Russia has apparently rejected the Christmas ceasefire. I repeat my appeal to all people of good will to respect at least a 24-hour ceasefire on the Feast of the Nativity of Jesus. In Ukraine and throughout the world."/ DW
