Explosion in coal mine in Poland/ 2 miners killed, 8 evacuated

Two miners died in a methane explosion at a coal mine in the Polish state, similar to a methane event that killed 14 people in 2022. 

The details were confirmed by the company Jastrzebska Spolka Weglowa (JSW), the owner of the mine.

The accident occurred in Pniowek, Silesia, in southern Poland. The explosion occurred at a depth of 830 meters.

"The two miners who lost their lives had many years of experience. They were aged 40 and 41," JSW said in a statement.

Eight other miners were evacuated in time. Rescuers pulled out the two victims after a seven-hour search.

"We all share the pain of the families of the two miners who lost their lives in the Pniewice mine. The management of JSW assured me that their relatives will receive all the necessary support," Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote today.

According to public broadcaster TVP, 15 people have died in Polish mines since the beginning of the year, 12 of them in coal mines. /CNA
