Pope Leo XIV delivered his first Christmas address to cardinals and senior Vatican officials. The pope called on them to connect with one another in a fraternal way and urged them to avoid the forces of division and the risk of falling into rigidity or ideology, but to build unity and communion within the Vatican offices and serve as a prophetic sign to a fragmented world.

Aware that Pope Francis had often used the traditional pre-Christmas address to the Roman Curia to deliver some strong messages, Vatican officials had been eagerly awaiting what Pope Leo would say.

The Pope followed the example of his predecessor and clearly stated what he expected from the Curia and those who worked in it.

Unlike Francis, Leo worked in the Curia for two years before becoming pope and is perhaps more aware of the internal dynamics of this body and what needs to change. This was evident from the speech, which he gave in the Vatican's Hall of Blessings.

Pope Leo said that the task of building community is urgent both for the internal good and for the community outside the Church everywhere in the world./CNA
