Netanyahu rejects independent investigation into Hamas' October 7 attacks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected an independent investigation into the October 7, 2023, attacks in southern Israel by Hamas that sparked the two-year war in the Gaza Strip.

Instead of creating an independent investigative commission, Netanyahu is seeking to appoint a government committee to investigate the events surrounding the attacks.

A cabinet committee has approved a bill to create such a government commission, submitted by a lawmaker from Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party. A preliminary vote on the bill is scheduled for Wednesday in parliament.

The move has been sharply criticized by experts, the opposition and relatives of former hostages and victims of the October 7 attacks, who accuse the government of covering up the events.

Critics accuse Netanyahu and his ruling coalition of failing to take personal responsibility for the political and military failures that led to the Hamas attack.

The Israeli prime minister, on the other hand, argues that an independent investigative commission would not have the support of the citizens. The leader of the Israeli opposition, Yair Lapid, has called for the establishment of an independent commission.

About 1,200 people were killed in the deadly attack on October 7, 2023, and more than 250 others were kidnapped and taken to the Gaza Strip. Israel declared war on Hamas the same day and launched massive attacks that flattened the Palestinian enclave. A fragile ceasefire has been in place since early October. /CNA
