US Coast Guard tracks oil tanker in international waters near Venezuela

US officials announced that the US Coast Guard is tracking an oil tanker in international waters near Venezuela.

Officials discovered the ongoing pursuit in the Caribbean Sea shortly after the US Coast Guard seized a second tanker off the coast of Venezuela.

Washington is stepping up a pressure campaign targeting the South American country's vital oil sector.

US media reports suggest that the pursuit involved a ship from the dark fleet that is subject to sanctions and is part of Venezuela's illegal efforts to evade sanctions.

The ship involved is said to be the Bella 1, an oil tanker that has been under US sanctions since 2024 for suspected links to Iran and Hezbollah.

US forces approached the tanker late Saturday but were unable to stop it, causing it to continue on its way.

According to tanker tracking website TankerTrackers, the ship was en route to Venezuela but was not carrying any cargo./CNA
