Police officers have shot dead a man armed with a knife who was threatening passersby on Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean.

The city's prosecutor, Nicolass Set, said he had launched a preliminary investigation into the incident, with the officer who shot the 26-year-old charged with intentional homicide. The young man, originally from Senegal, was shot more than once and died from his wounds.

"I am ruling out a terrorist attack at this stage because he did not make any such threat," Sett told reporters at the scene.

Police initially tried to use a taser to subdue the 26-year-old, but when that failed, one of them shot him several times. /CNA
