US conducts massive strikes against ISIS in Syria

The US has launched a series of large-scale airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) targets in Syria, in response to a deadly attack on US forces in the city of Palmyra.

The US Central Command (Centcom) announced that the operation, called “Hawkeye Strike”, involved fighter jets, attack helicopters and artillery, which hit more than 70 targets in various areas of central Syria. Aircraft from Jordan also participated in the operation, while more than 100 precision munitions were used, directed at ISIS infrastructure and weapons depots.

US President Donald Trump declared that the US is acting "very strongly" against ISIS strongholds, following the December 13 ambush in Palmyra, where two American soldiers and an American civilian translator were killed, while three other soldiers were wounded.

Centcom commander Admiral Brad Cooper said the US would continue to “relentlessly pursue terrorists who threaten Americans and our partners in the region.” Meanwhile, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth described the operation as an act of retaliation, stressing that it was not about starting a new war.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that ISIS positions near the cities of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor were targeted and that a senior leader of the group, along with several fighters, were suspected to have been killed. ISIS has not publicly responded to the attacks.

The US has maintained a military presence in Syria since 2015 as part of the international campaign against ISIS. Although the group lost the last territory it controlled in 2019, the United Nations estimates that it still has thousands of active fighters in Syria and Iraq./ CNA
