Russian Oreshnik nuclear missile deployed in Belarus

Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko announced that a new Russian-developed hypersonic nuclear-capable missile, known as Oreshnik, has been deployed in Belarus.

Last year, Russia publicly announced that it had developed the weapon, after using it during attacks on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, in an escalation of the conflict that is now approaching its fourth anniversary.

Moscow has deployed tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus since 2023 and had previously stated that it could deploy Oreshnik in this country by the end of 2025.

"Orshenik has been in Belarus since yesterday. And he has been put on combat duty," Lukashenko said during his annual address on December 18.

Belarus, a former Soviet republic, is a key ally of Russia. Moscow used Belarusian territory to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

In August of this year, Misku said he would practice deploying Oreshnik missiles during the joint military exercises Zapad-2025 (West-2025), near the border with the European Union and NATO's eastern flank./ Rel
