Diplomatic incident between Estonia and Russia/ Russian border guards entered

Estonia has reported that three Russian border guards entered and stayed for about 20 minutes on Estonian territory. The incident is turning into a diplomatic and operational incident, while Estonian authorities are investigating whether this was an unintentional act or a deliberate provocation.

The incident occurred yesterday, when a boat with several Russian soldiers was sailing on the Narva River. The boat stopped at the stone dam, which is located on Russian and Estonian territory at the entrance to Lake Peipus. At that time, three border guards got off and walked along the structure for about 20 minutes before leaving and returning to the boat.

The episode was recorded on video, which is available to Estonian authorities and is being evaluated as part of the relevant investigation.

As Tallinn reports, it has not yet been clarified whether the entry of the Russian border guards was the result of a mistake or whether it was a deliberate act of provocation, however, it is assured that there is no threat to the security of Estonia. The Estonian Interior Minister stated that he could not understand the motives behind the incident or the reason why it happened.

"There was no immediate threat to security, but the Police and Border Guard have significantly increased their presence and patrols ," he said.

He explained that the incident occurred in an area where, to reach there, Russian ships must request permission to pass through Estonian territory.

"There is a long-standing agreement on this. They have always informed us in advance. This time they did not inform us and such an incident happened ," he said. /CNA
