Venezuela denounces US blockade as warmongering threat

The Venezuelan government has condemned US President Donald Trump's decision to completely block oil tankers entering and leaving the country, calling it a warmongering threat.

Trump has designated the government of President Nicolás Maduro as a foreign terrorist organization and accused it of drug smuggling and human trafficking. The decision comes after the seizure last week of an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela and the imposition of sanctions on more than 30 other ships.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in South America and threatened to make the US military presence even larger. He also accused Maduro's government of using stolen oil to fund drug terrorism, assassinations and kidnappings.

The Venezuelan government reacted harshly, accusing the US of trying to steal its natural resources and criticizing the seizure of the Skipper tanker, stating that the crew and the ship were kidnapped and stolen.

The US actions come after several months of increased US military presence in the Caribbean Sea, including the positioning of the aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford within striking distance of Venezuela.

Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro has called the blockade an "act of war" and warned that Congress will vote on a resolution to demand that the president cease hostilities with Venezuela.
