The building where they were sheltering was considered a security risk/ Spanish

Police in Spain enforced several eviction orders on Wednesday to clear an abandoned school building where around 400 mostly undocumented migrants were living.

Many sub-Saharan migrants, mainly from Senegal and Gambia, were moved into the empty school building in Badalona, ??a city bordering Barcelona. Badalona's mayor, Xavier García Albiol, announced the evictions in a post on X.

"As I had promised, the eviction of the 400 illegal residents of the B9 school in Badalona begins," he wrote.

Albiol, of the conservative Popular Party (PP), has built his political career on an anti-immigration stance. Knowing that eviction in the middle of winter was approaching, most residents had left the occupied building to find other accommodation before police in special equipment from Catalonia's regional police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra, entered the school premises early in the morning on a court order.

The court order forced the municipality of Badalona to provide evicted people with access to social services, but did not force local authorities to find alternative housing for all illegal residents.

Many of the illegal residents made a living selling scrap metal collected from the streets. Others had residence and work permits but were forced to live there because they could not afford housing during a cost-of-living crisis that is making it difficult for even working Spaniards to buy or rent homes. The housing crisis has led to widespread social anxiety and public protests. /CNA
