Hungary and the US sign a 5-year gas supply agreement

Hungary announced that it has signed a five-year contract for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) with the US energy company Chevron, but as an EU member state, it will continue to rely heavily on Russia for its fossil fuel supplies.

The new agreement between Chevron and Hungarian state-owned energy company MVM envisages the supply of 400 million cubic meters of LNG annually over the next five years, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjarto said at a press conference.

With US Undersecretary of Energy James Danley at his side, the Hungarian foreign minister hailed a new "golden era" of energy cooperation between the two NATO members.

The Central European country of 9.5 million remains the Kremlin's closest ally within the European Union, despite Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Hungary has resisted calls from the EU and the US to reduce its dependence on Moscow for its energy needs.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto had previously said that seven billion cubic meters of Russian gas had arrived in Hungary by the end of November. Last year, Hungary consumed about 8.5 billion cubic meters. /CNA
