Kiev's proposal for a Christmas ceasefire/ Kremlin rejects it: We want permanent peace

Russia remains firm in its stance on achieving a lasting peace, not a temporary ceasefire, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, following Kiev's proposal for a Christmas ceasefire.

Peskov said that such a ceasefire would give Ukraine time to regroup and prepare for the continuation of the war.

"We want peace, we don't want a ceasefire that would give Ukraine breathing space and time to prepare for the continuation of the war. We want to stop this war, achieve our goals, secure our interests and guarantee peace in Europe for the future. This is what we want,"  Peskov told reporters, reiterating Moscow's position on Ukrainian initiatives for a temporary ceasefire.

The Kremlin spokesman also spoke about contacts between Russian President Vladimir Putin and United States President Donald Trump, explaining that the two leaders have not spoken on the phone since their last communication on October 16. /CNA
