For the first time/ Ukraine hits a Russian submarine with underwater drones

Ukraine hit a Russian submarine with drones in Novorossiysk, Ukraine's SBU security service said, marking the first time such an attack has been carried out.

The SBU said that Sub Sea Baby underwater drones blew up a Russian 636.3 "Varshavyanka" submarine, known as the Kilo class, by its NATO reporting name.

The submarine, worth up to 340 million euros, suffered critical damage and was effectively put out of action.

Stressing the strategic importance of the target, Ukraine's Security Service said the hit Russian submarine was carrying four launchers for Kalibr cruise missiles, which the enemy uses to strike targets in Ukraine.

Kalibr missiles have been repeatedly used by Moscow in long-range attacks against Ukraine, including attacks on civilian infrastructure and energy facilities.

Ukrainian officials said the operation marked the first time in history that underwater attack drones had been successfully used against a submarine of this class, demonstrating the further evolution of Ukraine's naval campaign./CNA
