Deutsche Welle classified as an "undesirable organization" in Russia

The Russian prosecutor's office has classified German broadcaster Deutsche Welle as an "undesirable organization." The lower house of parliament had called on the prosecutor's office to make this decision by August 2024.

" The Russian stance will not discourage us.  Russia may label us an 'undesirable organization,' but that will not discourage us. This new attempt to silence the free media shows how little the regime values ??press freedom and how much it fears independent reporting," said DW director-general Barbara Masching.

DW has already been classified as a "foreign agent" in Russia since 2022. This categorizes media outlets and organizations that receive foreign funding.

Previously, DW was banned from broadcasting news, its Moscow studio was forced to evacuate, and access to the website dw.com was blocked in the country.

Among the media outlets classified as "undesirable organizations" are Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Bellingcat, CORRECTIV, Reporters Without Borders and TV Rain. /CNA
