Shooting at Brown University in the US/ 2 killed and 8 seriously injured

At least two people were killed and eight others were seriously injured at midnight in a shooting at Brown University in the US city of Providence, Rhode Island.

Authorities said the suspect remains at large and a shelter-in-place order is in effect.

"I can confirm that there are two individuals who have passed away and there are eight others in critical, though stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital," Mayor Brett Smiley told reporters at a news conference, along with city authorities and Brown University officials.

The shooting occurred in the Barus and Holley Engineering Building on campus, which houses classrooms and lab space. Police said officers immediately entered the building and conducted a thorough search, but did not find a suspect.

Police said the suspect is believed to be a male dressed in black who exited the building. No suspects have been arrested and the motive remains unknown.

Rescue teams, acting together with police, continued searching the campus buildings to ensure there were no more victims.

Authorities said multiple agencies were involved in the response, including state police, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Officials said federal and local agencies are coordinating closely as the investigation remains active. /CNA
