Ambush against US troops in Syria/Central Command: 3 killed and 3 wounded

Two American soldiers and an American civilian were killed and three others were wounded today in an ambush by the Islamic State group in central Syria, the US Central Command confirmed.

The attack on US troops in Syria is the first to cause casualties since the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad a year ago.

Central Command said in a post on 'X' that out of respect for the families and in accordance with War Department policy, the identities of the soldiers will be kept secret until 24 hours after their next of kin have been notified.

The shooting at Syrian and American forces occurred during a visit by American troops to a central historic city, leaving several wounded, Syrian state media and a war monitor said.

The shooting took place near Palmyra, according to the state news agency SANA, which said two members of the Syrian security force and several US soldiers were wounded. The wounded were taken by helicopters to the al-Tanf garrison near the border with Iraq and Jordan.
