Massive protests in Bulgaria / Government resigns

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov resigned on December 11 after weeks of anti-corruption protests. Thousands of people protested in Bulgaria against the government's budget plans, forcing the executive branch to abandon them.

The protesters then demanded the resignation of the government. Zhelyazkov announced his resignation in a televised statement minutes before Parliament was scheduled to vote on a motion of no confidence in the executive. The government's resignation comes just before Bulgaria joins the eurozone on January 1, 2026.

"Our coalition met, we discussed the current situation, the challenges we face and the decisions we must make responsibly," Zhelyazkov said, during the resignation announcement.

"Our desire is to be at the level that society expects. Power comes from the voice of the citizens ," he emphasized.

Despite the government withdrawing the budget decision, protests in Sofia and dozens of Bulgarian cities continued, with citizens protesting corruption and the failure of the country's successive governments to combat it.

Opposition parties and other organizations have said they were protesting against plans to increase social security contributions and dividend taxes to finance higher state spending.

In the past four years, Bulgaria has held seven parliamentary elections – the last one was held in October 2024 – as the country faces major political and social divisions.

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev also called on the government to resign earlier this week. In a message to lawmakers in a Facebook post on Thursday, Radev said that “between the voice of the people and the fear of the mafia, listen to the public squares.”

Radev, who has limited powers under the Bulgarian Constitution, will now ask the parties in Parliament to try to form a new government and if they fail to do so, he will create a caretaker government to run the country until new elections are held. /REL
