"Resign, leave"/ Thousands protest against the government in Bulgaria

Tens of thousands of people protested in Sofia and other cities across Bulgaria on Sunday, demanding the government's resignation.

This is the third time that protesters have gathered on Independence Square outside the parliament in the center of the Bulgarian capital, calling for "Resignation" and holding banners reading "Leave!".

The wave of discontent began to grow in late November, when the government tried to speed up the approval of the 2026 budget, as the poorest country in the EU prepares to adopt the euro currency on January 1.

The Bulgarian government withdrew its draft budget on December 3, which included increases in taxes and social security contributions.

The increases were designed to cover the embezzlement of public funds, according to protesters and the opposition. A new draft budget was submitted to parliament earlier this week. /CNA
