Zelensky: I am ready for elections in Ukraine, they will be held within 60 to 90

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that he is ready for elections, after US President Donald Trump said that the country Ukraine should hold elections. 

"Since this question is being asked today by the president of the United States of America, our partners, I will answer very briefly. Listen, I am ready for elections," Zelensky told reporters.

The Ukrainian leader added that he would like the United States and "possibly" European allies to provide security for the elections, which he said Ukraine could hold within 60 to 90 days.

"I personally have the will and readiness to do this," Zelensky said.

On Monday, Trump called on Zelensky to hold elections amid the ongoing war with Russia. According to the Ukrainian constitution, the country has not held elections since Zelensky won the presidency in 2019, having declared martial law after Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022.

"They are using the war to not have an election. I think the Ukrainian people should have that election. They talk about democracy, but they are getting to the point where it is no longer a democracy," President Trump said. 

President Trump criticized Zelensky on Sunday for not yet reading the U.S.-backed peace plan. The Ukrainian president has strongly opposed any land concessions in exchange for ending the war. /CNA
