Trump sharply criticizes Europe as "weak" and "rotting"

Donald Trump has hinted that he may withdraw support for Ukraine, while doubling down on his administration's recent criticism of Europe, describing it as "weak" and "rotting" and claiming it is "destroying itself" through immigration.

In a brief interview with Politico, a transcript of which was released Tuesday, the US president struggled to name any Ukrainian city other than Kyiv, misinterpreted elements of the conflict's trajectory and recycled far-right tropes about European immigration that echoed the "great replacement" conspiracy theory.

Trump called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept his proposal to cede territory to Russia, arguing that Moscow held the "upper hand" and that Zelenskyy's government should "play the game."

In his often-interrupted remarks, Trump veered from one topic to another, repeating familiar grudges and conspiracies. He also repeatedly refused to rule out sending U.S. troops to Venezuela as part of his efforts to oust President Nicolás Maduro.

"I don't want to exclude anyone. I don't talk about that," Trump said, adding that he didn't want to talk about military strategy.

The US president repeatedly described what he called Europe's problems in downright racist terms, calling several unidentified European leaders "really stupid."

"If it continues the way it is going, Europe will not be... in my opinion... many of these countries will not be stable countries anymore. Their immigration policy is a disaster. What they are doing with immigration is a disaster. We had a disaster coming, but I was able to stop it," Trump said.
