Germany: The threat and danger from drones is increasing

Drones flying near major airports or aircraft are creating an increasing risk to air traffic in Germany, the German Air Safety Service announced.

Dangerous incidents involving drones in German airspace are on the rise. According to the German Air Safety Service (DFS), 208 dangerous drone-related incidents had been recorded in the German airspace by the end of November this year. This is a significant increase compared to the 149 such incidents recorded in the same period last year. The annual record of 161 incidents recorded in 2024 has even been surpassed.

The DFS generally only records cases where drones come within a dangerous distance of civilian aircraft or airports. When drones are seen in restricted areas, major airports suspend flights. In most cases, it remains unclear who is flying the drones. In addition to inexperienced people, authorities increasingly suspect that drones flying near airports are used by secret services or terrorists.

Most drones at major airports

Nearly three-quarters (74 percent) of drones were detected near major airports. A significant increase was observed at Germany's largest airport in Frankfurt. In the past eleven months, 45 dangerous drone incidents were recorded there, compared with just 17 in the same period last year. Frequent drone alerts were also reported from Cologne/Bonn (14 incidents), Hamburg (13) and Munich (12). Berlin's main airport, which saw a high number of drones last year, reported just eight incidents this year.

In Germany, drones are not allowed to fly closer than 1.5 km from runways where planes take off or land. Violating this rule can lead to prison sentences of up to 10 years./ DW
