The problems for the Louvre museum are endless / A water leak damages hundreds

The Louvre Museum has faced another problem, weeks after the spectacular jewel heist. A water leak that occurred in late November damaged hundreds of works in the Louvre's Egyptian department, the museum said in a statement.

"300 or 400 works were affected by the incident," said the museum's deputy administrator, Francis Steinbock, describing the works as Egyptological journals and scientific documentation used by researchers.

"The damaged items date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and were extremely useful ," Steinbock added.

The Louvre Museum said there would be an internal investigation into the incident, which was caused by the accidental opening of a valve in the heating and ventilation system that led to water seeping through the ceiling of the Mollien wing, where the books were stored.

The totally outdated system had been shut down for months and was due to be replaced by September 2026, the museum administrator added.

“The works will be dried, sent to a bookbinder for restoration, and then returned to the bookshelves ,” Steinbock said.

At the end of November, the Louvre said it would raise ticket prices for most non-EU visitors, meaning American, British and Chinese tourists, among others, would have to pay 32 euros (28 pounds) to enter.

The museum said the 45% price hike was intended to boost annual revenue by up to $23 million to fund structural improvements. The Louvre welcomed 8.7 million visitors in 2024, 69% from abroad.

The incident follows an October robbery in which a gang of four raided the world's most visited art museum in broad daylight, stealing jewelry worth an estimated $102 million (£76.5 million) in just seven minutes before fleeing.  /CNA
