7.5 Richter earthquake in Japan/ 33 injured, evacuation plans begin

Japan's Meteorological Agency has issued its highest-level warning that a megaquake could follow Monday's magnitude 7.5 tremor.

Authorities urged everyone living near the Pacific coast to remain vigilant throughout the coming week and prepare evacuation plans in case they have to leave their homes.

Monday evening's earthquake injured at least 33 people and produced widespread tsunami warnings, with waves up to 70cm high observed in some coastal communities.

Nuclear power plants in the northeastern region are conducting emergency checks for impacts from the earthquake, which struck at around 11:15 p.m. in the Pacific Ocean about 50 miles off the coast of Aomori, the northernmost prefecture of Japan's main island of Honshu.

The government said it was assessing the damage from the tsunami waves and earthquake.

A megaquake, defined as an extremely powerful tremor with a magnitude of 8.0 or greater, would threaten large tsunamis along Japan's entire Pacific coast, authorities warned.

Tuesday's announcement was the first time this high-level alert has been issued since the warning system was launched in 2022./CNA
