"Citizens need light on all issues"/ Karamanlis and Venizelos accuse

Former Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and former Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos, present at an event, have criticized the Mitsotakis government.

Karamanlis said that Parliament is being discredited in the eyes of citizens when they feel that the Investigative Committees, for example, act under pretext or delay.

While former Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos, for his part, spoke about the crisis of democracy that exists as the country has become ungovernable.

"This does not mean that there is no government, but that there is a need for transcendentalities, division and consensus," he noted.

Karamanlis stated in his speech that the danger today does not come from noisy deviations or spectacular and noisy conflicts. He said that democracy is not eroded by a single act, but by numerous deviations.

"On the contrary, it comes from the slow and insidious slide towards tolerance and recognition of the phenomena of degradation of the rules. The quality of Democracy is not eroded by a single act, but by the cumulative effect of many small deviations. The big issue is the possibility of concealing or degrading information, which when it reaches citizens at the right time shapes opinions, concerns, decisions. Citizens need light on all matters of public interest. No expediency is superior. The mission of the press is not to embellish situations, nor to anoint the powers that be. It is to strictly control them, whatever they may be, however high they may be," declared Karamanlis.

The judicial investigation into the case of telephone wiretapping of political leaders, ministers, senior military officers, journalists and others did not provide convincing answers to the main questions that arose, regarding the legality, feasibility, reasons given, approvals given, and their content./CNA
