Visit to Italy/ President Zelensky holds 30-minute meeting with Pope Leo

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met this Tuesday with Pope Leo XIV for a 30-minute discussion at the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo during his visit to Italy.

The visit comes as Kiev works to secure support from key partners while navigating a tense diplomatic landscape shaped by the recent US push for a solution.

Zelensky is also expected to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni later in the day.

"During the talks, the Holy Father reiterated the need for continued dialogue. In addition, the issues of prisoners of war and the need to ensure the return of Ukrainian children to their families were also discussed," the Vatican said. 

Pope Leo, who has called for a "just and lasting" peace since assuming the papacy, has repeatedly expressed support for the Ukrainians and signaled the Vatican's willingness to host negotiations.

European leaders have been concerned about being excluded from talks built around a draft US-Russia plan, which demanded broad concessions from Kiev and caused alarm in EU capitals.

Zelensky's meeting with him follows talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other leaders in London on December 8, before the Ukrainian president traveled to Brussels for meetings with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and senior EU officials./CNA
