Bird flu alarms Spain/ Around 400 storks found dead on the banks of a river

A bird flu alert has been raised in Spain. Around 400 storks have been found dead in the municipality of Getafe in Madrid. Local authorities have announced that they will carry out tests to determine the severity of the virus.

"The Madrid region is carrying out further tests after a large number of dead storks were found on the banks of the Manzanares River," authorities said.

Further, authorities in Madrid have announced that measures are being implemented for the outbreak of highly aggressive bird flu.

The measures include banning the breeding of ducks and geese with other poultry species, banning free-range poultry farming, limiting visits to poultry farms and monitoring water supplies to ensure they are not contaminated.

The authorities said in a statement that the flu can be transmitted to humans through mucous membranes, with a similar outcome to seasonal flu, although no cases of transmission through direct contact have been observed in Europe. The flu cannot be transmitted through the consumption of poultry products.

In total, more than 200 cases of bird flu have already been identified on poultry farms across Europe this season, a higher number than in previous years. /CNA
