UN: Over 9,000 children in Gaza hospitalized for malnutrition in October

Malnutrition continues to affect young people in Gaza, despite a ceasefire announced two months ago. According to the UN, more than 9,000 children were hospitalized for malnutrition in October.

While the immediate threat of famine has diminished for most of the 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza following the announcement of a ceasefire on October 10, the UN and other aid agencies report continued Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid deliveries, which they say fall far short of the needs of a population weakened and traumatized by two years of war, lack of housing and living in flimsy shelters.

"In Gaza hospitals I met some newborns weighing less than a kilogram, their tiny chests heaving in an attempt to survive," said Tess Ingram, a spokeswoman for the UN children's protection agency.

In October, some 8,300 pregnant and breastfeeding women were also hospitalized for acute malnutrition. UNICEF and other UN agencies say aid distribution to Gaza has increased since the height of the war, but is still insufficient in relation to humanitarian needs.

An average of 140 aid trucks per day have crossed so far in December, in groups of vehicles organized by the UN and the International Organization for Migration. This is far below the target of 600 trucks per day set as part of the ceasefire.

Since the ceasefire, aid has been coordinated through a multinational hub called the Civil-Military Coordination Center, led by the United States and Israel and including representatives from other countries that support the ceasefire. However, diplomats and aid officials say the Israeli military still has the final say on what is allowed into Gaza. /CNA
