Senior US officials are expected to meet in Paris on Saturday with officials from Ukraine, France, Germany and the United Kingdom to discuss President Donald Trump's peace plan. The meeting comes as an attempt to build consensus on the US president's peace plan, but it comes at a time of high transatlantic tensions.

The meeting in the French capital follows talks Wednesday between Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Rubio led the U.S. delegation for talks with Ukraine in Geneva three weeks ago, but negotiations have since been taken over by Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

Zelensky and European leaders also want to hold a joint conference call with Trump, but that has not yet been scheduled. Ukraine reportedly submitted a detailed counterproposal to the latest U.S. peace plan to the Trump administration on Wednesday. A Ukrainian official said it includes new ideas for resolving sticking points, such as the territorial issue and control of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday that Moscow wants to see a peace plan that includes security guarantees for all sides and addresses the root causes of the conflict. Lavrov added that Russia will not accept Ukraine's membership in NATO and has submitted proposals for collective security guarantees to the United States. He also claimed that all misunderstandings with the United States were resolved at President Putin's meeting last week with Witkoff and Kushner. / CNA
