Trump: We have seized an oil tanker near Venezuela

US President Donald Trump announced during a meeting with business leaders at the White House that US forces have seized a sanctioned oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. Trump said it was the largest tanker ever seized.

US officials confirmed to international media that the operation was led by the US Coast Guard, but did not name the ship or say when or where the incident occurred.

The Venezuelan government has yet to comment on the incident. The development comes as the US has increased its military presence in the region in recent weeks, in an operation said to be aimed at combating drug trafficking.

Venezuela has some of the world's largest oil deposits and its president, Nicolás Maduro, has previously accused the US of trying to seize the country's reserves. /CNA
