Iran seizes tanker with 6 million liters of smuggled fuel and detains 18 crew

Iranian authorities have detained 18 crew members of a foreign oil tanker they seized in the Gulf of Oman and which was suspected of carrying 6 million liters of smuggled fuel, Iranian media reported today, citing judicial authorities in Hormozgan province.

The tanker's captain is among those arrested. The identity of the tanker and the nationalities of the crew members have not been disclosed. However, Fars news agency previously reported that the crew members are from India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Iranian authorities said the tanker committed numerous violations, including ignoring orders to stop, attempting to escape, and lacking navigation and cargo documents.

Fuel prices in Iran are among the lowest in the world, making smuggling to other countries more profitable.

Iran had seized an oil tanker in the Gulf region in November "for transporting unauthorized cargo," ruling out the possibility that this was retaliation against another country.

The new seizure occurred in a tense geopolitical context, two days after the United States seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela.

According to Washington, the tanker, Skipper, was transporting oil from Venezuela and Iran. The ship was sanctioned in 2022 by the US Treasury Department for suspected links to Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps and Lebanon's Hezbollah./ CNA
