They planned an attack on a Christmas market/ 5 people arrested in Germany,

Five people have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of planning an attack on a Christmas market. The arrested include three Moroccans, one Egyptian and one Syrian.

Prosecutors said the Egyptian, who according to Bild newspaper was an imam at a mosque in the area, is suspected of having called for a car attack on the Christmas market, with the aim of killing or injuring as many people as possible. The Moroccans are suspected of having agreed to carry out the attack.

Authorities did not say when the planned attack was to take place or which market was targeted, although they said they believed it was in the Dingolfing-Landau area, northeast of Munich. The five suspects appeared before a judge yesterday and were remanded in custody.

Christmas markets are popular festive attractions across Germany, often drawing large crowds and significant tourism. Security at the events has been stepped up in recent years, following an attack in Berlin in 2016, when a man drove a truck into a crowd of people at the market, killing 12 people. /CNA
