Greece and Albania connected by a highway / Here's when the works will

The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has announced the start of construction of the Ioannina-Kakavija highway at the end of this year.

According to the ministry, the 70-kilometer highway, worth 310 million euros, has been fully financed under the EU-supported National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF/ESPA 2021–2027).

This project, expected to be completed within 4.5 years, will extend the Ionia Highway in northern Greece to the Kakavija border crossing, creating a vital cross-border corridor with Albania.

Speaking recently to the Athens News Agency (ANA), Dimitris Anagnopoulos, the General Secretary of Infrastructure, said that the project is technically difficult, but will provide a state-of-the-art highway that he said strengthens regional and national development.

The highway will connect Ioannina with Kalpaki and the villages of Zagoria before reaching Kakavija, connecting Greece's two main networks from west to north, the Oda Ionia and Oda Egnatia, with Albania.

Plans for this highway include six road junctions, the restoration of local roads, and future improvements to the Kalpaki-Kakavija segment.

Preparatory works are reported to have already begun. The contracting firm has been appointed, geotechnical studies are in progress, and final design reviews and property expropriations are progressing.

Once completed, the highway is expected to transform connectivity in northwestern Greece, facilitating mobility and reinforcing Greece's role as a gateway to the Western Balkans. /CNA
