"The ceasefire is being threatened"/ Hamas reacts to the assassination

Hamas's chief negotiator, Khalil Al-Hayya, said the killing of one of the group's top commanders by the Israeli military is threatening the sustainability of the ceasefire.

"Israel's continued violations of the ceasefire agreement and the recent killings targeting Saeed and others threaten the sustainability of the agreement. We call on the mediators, and especially the main guarantor, the US administration and President Donald Trump, to work to compel Israel to respect the ceasefire and commit to it," Al-Hayya said in a speech.

The elimination of the group's top commander, Raed Saed, is the first killing of a senior Hamas figure since a US-backed Gaza ceasefire agreement came into effect in October.

Hamas sources have described Saeed as the deputy commander of the group's armed wing, after Izz eldeen Al-Hadad. Israel says Saeed was one of the main architects of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that sparked the war.

Meanwhile, Al-Hayya also spoke about the UN-proposed International Stabilization Force (ISF).

"The role of international forces should be limited to maintaining the ceasefire and separating the two sides along the borders of Gaza. With no role inside the Strip or interference in its internal affairs ," he said.

The deployment of force is a key part of the next phase of Trump's Gaza peace plan. Under the first phase, a ceasefire in the two-year war began on October 10 with the release of hostages by Hamas and the release of Palestinians detained by Israel.

US Central Command will host a conference in Doha on December 16 with partner countries to plan the International Stabilization Force for Gaza. /CNA
