Starmer's order: Investigation into foreign election interference after

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has ordered an investigation into possible foreign interference in the election, following the jailing of a former senior Reform UK official who was found guilty of accepting bribes to promote Russian interests in the European Parliament.

The decision came after revelations that the former politician had received money to influence his pro-Russian campaign at the European level, a development that has revived concerns about the extent of foreign interference in the British political system.

The inquiry will be led by Philip Rycroft, the former permanent secretary of the Brexit department.

The investigation is a direct response to the imprisonment of Nathan Gill, the former leader of Reform UK in Wales, who admitted accepting tens of thousands of pounds in cash to make pro-Russian statements in the media and the European Parliament.

In this case, officers said they believed that several individuals had a direct connection to Vladimir Putin.

Communities Secretary Steve Reed, who announced the inquiry in the House of Commons on Tuesday, wants Rycroft to assess how well the rules are working at the moment and promised the report would be published in full. /CNA
