Croatia confirms first case of leprosy since 1993

A case of leprosy has been registered in Croatia for the first time in more than 30 years.

This is an isolated case of a foreign worker from Nepal, who has been living in Croatia for two years with his family.

According to infectious disease specialists from the Dubrava Clinical Hospital, there is no risk of the disease spreading among the population.

"To become infected, prolonged and close contact is required, such as living in the same household, sleeping in the same bed, and having poor living conditions. Of course, you can't get leprosy from someone on the street," the announcement says.

The last recorded case of leprosy in Croatia was in 1993, and since then, the country has never experienced a pandemic of the disease.

Today, leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is completely curable with antibiotics, although the treatment is long-term, but it is very effective./CNA
