Kosovo imposes safeguard measures for oil

The acting Minister of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade, Rozeta Hajdari, said that she has set a trade margin for petroleum products used for transportation.

According to the decision, the maximum trade margin allowed for wholesale sales will be up to 2 cents per liter, while for retail sales it will be up to 12 cents per liter.

Hajdari said that the decision to impose protective measures on petroleum products used for transportation was taken with the aim of "protecting consumers and fair competition in the domestic market."

"This decision is the result of continuous surveillance of the oil market, through daily records of Kosovo Customs and reports by the Central Inspectorate of Market Surveillance, where it has been evidenced that changes in supply prices from imports are often reflected in an immediate increase in sales prices, while there is no proportional reflection in a decrease when supply prices fall," she wrote on Facebook.

The decision will enter into force after its publication in the Official Gazette. According to Hajdari, it is expected that inspections by the Market Inspectorate will be increased regarding the implementation of the decision.

The current retail price of diesel is around 1.25 euros per liter.

Even in the past, the Kosovo Government, led by Albin Kurti, now the acting Prime Minister, had imposed protective measures for oil.

In 2023, such a decision was opposed by oil workers, who argued at the time that the decision was made based on an inspection of several companies that "abuse the price of oil" and that such decisions "are harming the entire sector."
