US/Venezuela blockade: Oil exports continue without problems

The Venezuelan government has stated that the naval blockade declared by the United States, an action described by President Nicolas Maduro, calling it an "immediate threat to national sovereignty, international law and peace", has not affected, at least up to this stage, oil exports, the Latin American country's main source of income.

"Exports of crude oil and its by-products are proceeding without problems. Oil tankers continue to sail in complete safety ," the state-owned oil company PdVSA assured.

Designed to cut off Caracas' revenues, the blockade was announced by US President Donald Trump, who since the summer has ordered the concentration of military assets with firepower in the Caribbean, off the coast of Venezuela.

During his conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, President Maduro "denounced the recent statements of US President Donald Trump in which he claimed in an unacceptable manner that the oil, natural resources and territory of Venezuela belong to him," according to a statement issued by his government.

Announcing the blockade, the US president alleged that Venezuela had "stolen" oil and territory belonging to the United States, without providing any evidence for the claim, which appears to refer to the nationalization of the country's oil industry in the 1970s and the imposition of an obligation on major foreign oil companies with a presence in the country to join joint ventures under the control of PdVSA.

Maduro stressed that such statements should be categorically rejected by the United Nations, as they constitute a direct threat to national sovereignty, international law and peace, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, which warns of serious consequences for regional peace. /CNA
