Cyberattack on French Interior Ministry servers/ 22-year-old arrested, acted via email

A suspect has been arrested in connection with a cyberattack on the email servers of the French interior ministry.

The hackers gained access to highly sensitive files, including some related to criminal data.

The prosecutor's office said the suspect is a 22-year-old known to law enforcement, having been recently convicted of similar crimes.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunes said the cyberattack was more serious than initially thought.

"A few days ago I said that we didn't know if there had been any violations or not. Now we know that there were violations, but we don't know their extent," Nunes said.

The home secretary has called for tighter security measures after passwords to protected files were allegedly shared through compromised email accounts, allowing hackers to operate unhindered.

A group of hackers claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, claiming to have stolen personal data related to 16 million citizens. /CNA
