Germany's participation in the peacekeeping force in Ukraine

According to the plans of the "coalition of the willing" in Ukraine, a multinational peacekeeping force is needed. But whether German soldiers will be part of it remains an open question.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has left open the question of German participation in a peacekeeping force in Ukraine. Asked live on German public television ZDF whether the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) would participate in such a mission, Merz dodged the question by stating that the "coalition of the willing" includes not only European countries, but also, for example, Canada, Australia and other countries around the world. The deployment of a peacekeeping force in Ukraine is one of several promises made by various countries at the recent meeting on Ukraine in Berlin, if a ceasefire agreement is reached between Russia and Ukraine.

In addition to Chancellor Merz, the declaration was also signed by his counterparts from France, Great Britain, Poland, Italy, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, as well as EU Council President António Costa and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Let's wait and see what Putin will do?

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) has also expressed reservations about German participation in a peacekeeping force in Ukraine. However, he said that the offer made by the Europeans is a commitment to shared responsibility. "If Putin says in which direction things should go, then we will see what that means in detail."

During a video conference of the Contact Group on Ukraine, there were also clearer commitments: Pistorius' British counterpart, John Healey, said he was preparing the British armed forces "so that when there is peace we are ready for the mission with troops on the ground and fighter jets in the air."/ DW
