The Kosovo Special Prosecution Office filed an indictment on Thursday against Ramadan Morina on suspicion of war crimes against the civilian population during 1999 in Kosovo.
Morina, who was arrested in August, is accused of participating in the massacre of 34 Albanian civilians in March 1999 in the village of Burim in Malisheva, in the southeast of the country.
According to the indictment, he also participated in the destruction of property, the mass expulsion of the civilian population, and the looting of the property of around 1,000 citizens who were not involved in the war.
He has been held in custody since his arrest in the summer and is now expected to stand trial at the Basic Court in Pristina.
In recent years, Kosovo has increased the number of indictments in absentia for war crimes committed during the last war.
In August, it filed an indictment in absentia against 21 suspects in the forcible expulsion of more than 800,000 Albanian civilians from Kosovo during the war.
Since the end of the war, dozens of people have been convicted of war crimes before local and international institutions.
During the war in Kosovo, from 1998 to 1999, over 13,000 civilians were killed, while thousands more disappeared.
Over 1,600 people are still missing – most of them Albanians.
Hundreds of murdered Kosovo Albanians have been found in mass graves in Serbia. Their bodies were moved by Serbian forces in an attempt to cover up the crimes.
Serbia's political and military leaders have been arrested, tried and convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague for crimes against humanity committed in Kosovo.
Among them was Slobodan Milosevic, who died in prison without being convicted for his responsibility in ordering war crimes in Kosovo./REL
