Bondi Beach attack/Australian Prime Minister announces tough measures against

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said his government will take tough action against hate speech following Sunday's attack on Bondi Beach, where 15 people died.

"The new laws will target those who spread hatred, division and radicalisation," Albanese told reporters in Canberra.

The Home Secretary will also be given new powers to cancel or refuse visas for those who spread hatred, and a new task force will be set up to ensure the education system properly prevents, addresses and responds to antisemitism.

The new laws will also include penalties for preachers and leaders who promote violence, a new federal offense of aggravated hate speech, and the introduction of hate as an aggravating factor in sentencing crimes for online threats and harassment.

"Every Australian Jew has the right to feel safe, valued and respected for the contribution they make to our great nation. Terrorists, inspired by ISIS... sought to turn Australians against each other. Australians have responded to this act of hatred with love and sympathy for those who are grieving," Albanese said.

The prime minister acknowledged accusations from the Jewish community that his government had not done enough to prevent anti-Semitism since the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas, and said more could have been done.

"I accept my responsibility for this as prime minister of Australia. But what I also do is accept my responsibility to lead the nation and to unite the nation. Because what people are looking for at this time is not more division ," he said. /CNA
