TikTok owner signs deal to avoid US ban

Chinese company ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, has signed a binding agreement with American and international investors to operate its business in the United States, avoiding a ban on the app. The news was confirmed by TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew in a memo to employees.

Under the deal, half of the new joint venture will be owned by a group of investors including Oracle, Silver Lake and UAE-based investment firm MGX. ByteDance will hold a 19.9% ??stake, while the rest will be split between existing investors and new partners.

The deal, expected to close on January 22, ends years of tensions between Washington and ByteDance over concerns about national security and the protection of American user data. It comes after the Trump administration's decision to delay implementation of a law that would have banned TikTok if it were not sold.

Under the terms, TikTok's recommendation algorithm will be licensed and retrained on US user data, with the aim of avoiding foreign influence or manipulation. The White House has previously said that Oracle will play a key role in this process.

However, the agreement has been met with skepticism by some US lawmakers. Democratic Senator Ron Wyden stated that it does not guarantee the protection of the privacy of American users and that questions remain about the security of the algorithm.

TikTok says the platform has over 170 million users in the U.S. and that more than seven million small businesses use the app for marketing and sales. Some entrepreneurs have expressed hope that the new agreement will not harm their experience on the platform.

The agreement is widely seen as a political and economic compromise between the US and China, at a time of ongoing tensions between the two world powers./ CNA
