Rainfall on Hormuz Island transformed its Red Beach, as iron-rich soil flows stained the coastline and waters a deep red, attracting widespread attention online.

Torrential rain on Iran's Hormuz Island temporarily changed the color of its famous Red Beach this week, as runoff of iron-rich soil washed into the sea.

The flow turned parts of the coast and nearby waters a deep red, contrasting with the blue of the Persian Gulf.

The beach is known for its red sand and rocks, formed by high levels of iron oxide. When it rains, the earth's streams flow down and spread along the coast. The effect is short-lived, but attracts visitors, photographers and widespread attention on the Internet.

Hormuz Island is located in the Strait of Hormuz, where the Persian Gulf meets the Gulf of Oman. /CNA
