Decisive meeting in Miami on the war/ Zelensky: Washington proposed a trilateral

The international community is gathering in Miami today as U.S. negotiators and Russian officials meet for talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. The meeting comes as Russia has launched a near-unstoppable campaign of drone and missile attacks on ports critical to Ukraine's foreign trade and fuel supplies.

The airstrikes have also escalated despite intense U.S. diplomatic efforts to find a solution to end the war. Russia's economic envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, said on Monday he was traveling to Miami, U.S., for talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, which will enter its fifth year in February.

Dmitriev will meet with real estate mogul and current diplomat Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Marco Rubio, Trump's top diplomat and national security adviser, said he could also join the talks.

A group of Ukrainians and a group of Europeans have also traveled to the Florida city in the US to participate in negotiations led by Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, the US president's son-in-law.

However, it is unlikely that Kirill Dmitriev will hold direct negotiations with Ukrainian and European negotiators, as relations between the two sides remain extremely tense. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that the US had proposed a meeting with Ukrainian and Russian negotiators in Miami.

"Washington proposed a trilateral meeting format, as far as I know, Ukraine, the US, Russia," the Ukrainian president said, adding that European officials could participate and that it would make sense to hold such a joint meeting.

In addition, the Ukrainian head of state stated today that it is not up to the Russian president to decide on holding elections in Ukraine, after Vladimir Putin hinted yesterday that Russia could stop its attacks at sea on the day the elections are held. /CNA
