US/ Rubio reserved regarding Ukraine talks

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on the eve of talks in Miami on the possibility of peace in Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia, has expressed reservations.

"I think we've made progress, but we still have a long way to go and of course the hardest part always comes at the end," Rubio said at a press conference in Washington.

Today he said he will be partially present at the talks in Florida.

This weekend, US government representatives are meeting in Miami to talk separately with Kremlin and Ukrainian representatives about ending the war.

Following talks between key EU states, the US and Ukraine last Sunday (12/14/2025) in Berlin, American mediators want to coordinate the results with Russian representatives at the Miami meeting.

European representatives also at the talks in Florida

A few days ago, a high-ranking American official noted that there will be meetings with working groups. Military representatives will also be present, according to this source.

The US considers itself a mediator in the conflict. Ukrainian and European government representatives will also participate in these meetings in Florida, among them Chancellor Friedrich Merz's foreign policy advisor, Günter Sautter.

He has been traveling to the US since Friday for "unofficial talks with the US government," the German news agency DPA reported, citing government sources.

According to media reports, a meeting with President Donald Trump's special envoy for Ukraine, Steve Witkoff, is also scheduled.

The Russian delegation is represented at this meeting by President Vladimir Putin's advisor, Kirill Dmitriyev. He will talk with Witkoff about the results of the two-day talks held in Berlin. No details were given. During the consultations in Berlin a week ago, the central topics were: Security guarantees and territorial issues. /DW
