Massacre in South Africa/ Mass shooting at a tavern, 9 people killed

A serious incident has occurred in South Africa, where a mass shooting has left nine people dead and ten others injured. The incident took place in a tavern in a neighborhood in a gold mining area near Johannesburg.

Local police immediately launched a search for the perpetrators of the massacre, reporting that about 12 unidentified armed men arrived in two vehicles in Bekkersdal, opened fire on the tavern's customers, and continued shooting until they fled the scene.

Two of the victims were shot outside the tavern as they tried to flee, and a third was a taxi driver who had dropped off a passenger nearby.

The shooting happened around 1 a.m. local time on Sunday. South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world. An average of 63 people were killed each day between April and September this year, according to police figures.

The killings are often the result of feuds, robberies and gang violence, but the motive for these killings is unclear. Earlier this month, at least 11 people - including a child - were shot dead at a hostel near Pretoria. /CNA
