"It is violating the laws of the country"/ Russia begins imposing

Russia is gradually imposing restrictive measures on WhatsApp. This was announced by the Russian communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, which stated that WhatsApp "continues to violate Russian law."

"In light of this, Roskomnadzor is gradually introducing restrictive measures against WhatsApp. The gradual deterioration of calls on WhatsApp began in August, as Roskomnadzor reported in the media," Roskomnadzor said in a press release, adding that the restrictions are being gradually introduced to allow users to switch to other messaging apps.

Earlier today, approximately 1,600 complaints against WhatsApp were received over 24 hours, according to Sboy.rf, a Russia-based website for monitoring internet outages, and Downdetector.

Users reported interruptions in notifications, problems with sending messages, and unstable operation of the app and its website.

Previously, calls on WhatsApp and Telegram were restricted in Russia for security and fraud prevention purposes. In late November, Roskomnadzor warned that WhatsApp would be blocked completely if it did not comply with Russian legislation. /CNA
